Taproot Audio Design offers world class
mastering services and state-of-the-art gear at down-to-earth
prices. For the uninitiated, mastering can be somewhat of a mystery.
Mastering is the process of assembling a collection of individual
songs into a cohesive album by making them sound like they belong together
in tone, volume and timing (spacing between selections). It is the
"final step" in the process of recording a CD and sometimes referred
to as the first step in the manufacturing process. It also proves to
be very useful by introducing a “third ear” into the recording process
to provide a fresh perspective to the project. Also, with the increasing
ease and popularity of home recording, mastering can often make the
difference in a "good" recording and a "great" recording.
ALL commercial releases
are mastered. Mastering is not a piece of gear or "magic box" that music
is run through and comes out mastered. It is more of an art form that relies
on the engineer's experienced ear and knowledge of various musical
genres. The steps taken and/or equipment
used in mastering can vary greatly from project to project, but in
general will include one or more of the following processes:
1. Noise Reduction
2.Equalization
3.Stereo
Image Manipulation
4.Multiband
Compression
5.Sidechain/Bandpass
Compression
6.Program
Compression and/or Limiting
7.Dithering
and Re-sampling
8.Relative
Level Adjustments
9.Fade
Ins/Outs and Track Spacing
10.Input
of PQ codes (see below)
PQ
Codes- The PQ codes are the information that is entered into the data
track on the CD. This includes the track start times, ISRC codes,
UPC codes, track titles, CD title, copyright/publishing information,
additonal credits, etc. ISRC codes are used by radio stations and record
companies to track airplay of songs. If you have a UPC code , it can
be entered into the data area of the CD as well, for improved tracking
of CD sales.
